You can change that by pairing clear goals with clean measurement and steady management. Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) help you say what matters and how you will know. Performance metrics make progress visible and guide decisions while there is still time to adjust. Together, these two practices build focus, fairness, and momentum.

What do we mean by “Performance Metrics” and “OKRs”?

Used together, OKRs and performance metrics link everyday work to direction. People know the destination (Objective) and the scoreboard (Key Results and metrics). Managers use that scoreboard to coach, remove blockers, and decide small course corrections before problems grow.

Why pair performance metrics with OKRs?

Clarity speeds decisions. When teams see the same scoreboard, they can act without waiting for permission. Alignment improves quality, speed, and increases employee autonomy and overall engagement. Crossfunctional groups resolve tradeoffs earlier because the measures are public and shared. Fairness builds trust. Reviews that reference agreedupon evidence feel legitimate. How to implement OKRs?

  1. Set direction, then plan the quarter. Keep a 12–18month direction in plain language. Plan the next 90 days. Each team sets three to five OKRs. Fewer is better. If an Objective sounds like jargon, rewrite it until a frontline teammate can repeat it clearly and understand what it actually means.
  2. Write outcomes, not tasks. “Delight customers with faster help” is better than “Hire three agents.” The Key Results do the measuring. Prefer results (time, quality, reliability, adoption, margin) over activity (emails sent, meetings held).
  3. Define your metric canon. For each Key Result, specify the metric name, formula, data source, owner, and review cadence. Lock definitions early to prevent “number shopping.” If a metric needs revision, document the change and its effective date.
  4. Choose owners. Every Objective has an owner who tells the story and coordinates help. Every Key Result has an owner who knows the data and the plan. Ownership means clarity, not blame.
  5. Make progress visible every week. Use a short update or 15minute review: current numbers, what changed, what we will try next, and where we need help. When a number moves the wrong way, ask what the team learned and what small, reversible move you will try before the next review.
  6. Coach in oneonones. Use OKRs to focus the conversation. Confirm the week’s priorities, remove blockers, and give specific feedback tied to events and impact. Name wins with the same precision; people repeat what you recognize.
  7. Align crossfunctionally. Publish dependencies and shared metrics (for example, cycle time or customer effort) across teams. A shared measure reduces fingerpointing and speeds joint problemsolving.
  8. Run fair reviews. At quarter end (and year end), evaluate both results and behaviors. Ask how the person contributed to team OKRs, where they learned, and how they helped others succeed. Use examples from the whole period, not just the last few weeks. Calibrate across managers using shared standards, not a forced curve.
  9. Connect to development and rewards with care. Let OKRs inform growth and pay, but do not turn them into a compensation game. If you do, people will sandbag targets or avoid smart risk. Keep OKRs for focus and learning. Use a broader view for pay—scope, market, lasting impact, and values.
  10. Keep tools light. A single doc or sheet is enough. If you later adopt software, pick one that feels like the doc you would have written anyway. The tool should simplify writing, tracking, and reviewing – nothing more.

Practical example: A support team set an Objective to “deliver faster, kinder help.” They tracked firstresponse time and repeat contacts weekly. A midquarter dip exposed a knowledgebase gap and an uneven handoff. Two small changes – better suggested answers and a handoff checklist – moved all three numbers within a month. The team felt calmer. Stakeholders noticed.

IMPACT: What impact should I expect to see?
